Free Speech Centre is an independent nonprofit organization committed to defending press freedom, protecting journalists' rights, and advocating for free expression. We work to uphold the fundamental right to free expression and to strengthen independent media through advocacy, documentation of threats against journalists, professional guidance, and legal support.

When We Begin?

History

Free Speech Centre is a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to supporting journalists and upholding press freedom and freedom of speech. Our primary mission is to address the critical needs of journalists and media professionals in Afghanistan and countries around the region. Through these efforts, the Centre aims to uphold journalistic integrity, advocate for press freedom on a global scale, and catalyze positive change within the countries by fostering transparency, access to information, and democratic principles. The organization was founded on January 31, 2024, as a Non-Profit institution under the Canada-Not-For-Profit Corporation Act in the city of Toronto, ON, Canada. As per the Centre's bylaws, all members have the right to actively participate in meetings, contribute to discussions, vote on organizational matters, and receive regular updates on the organization's activities. Membership is open to all journalists aligning with the purpose and mission of the Centre, committed to promoting a free and vibrant media landscape.

Committees

Monitoring committee - The Monitoring Committee systematically observes and analyzes the Afghan media landscape, compiling reports every three months to provide a comprehensive overview of press freedom. These reports document challenges faced by journalists, aiming to raise awareness and advocate for the preservation of press freedom.
Advocacy committee - The Advocacy Committee is responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and execution of all advocacy initiatives, with final approval required from the board of directors.
